Joris Laarman: Microstructures Series

Laarman’s Microstructures Chairs are the culmination of a massive research project, in which cutting-edge fabrication, handcraft, and personal esthetic all play a role. A deep dive into the possibilities of 3D printing, the works are engineered on a cellular level – each small subunit of each chair has a unique shape. They also vary in their material expression. The Gradient Chair (Dual Cell) is made of a printed polyurethane; its internal construction combines rigid strong points and open parts that allow it to be flexible and soft. Other works in the series are metal-plated, or cast in solid aluminum.
